Homeowner Resources: Tile

Proper maintenance is the key to a trouble-free porcelain tile or ceramic floor:
Vacuum or sweep regularly to remove any dirt or grit.

Remove spills promptly using a clean, dry cloth

You should damp mop your floor at least one time per week (more often for heavy traffic areas).

Use a back and forth motion with the mop. When the mop cloth becomes soiled, replace it with a clean one. Cleaning the floor with a soiled cover mop cloth could cause streaking.

Most manufacturers have their own brand of floor cleaner. If a manufacturer's brand is not available, a mixture of 1 cup of white vinegar to 2 gallons of clean tap water can be used. Never use a detergent or soap, since it can dull the surface or promote the growth of mildew.

Important Tips:
Caution: You should allow your new ceramic tile and grout to dry for at least 72 hours after installation before damp mopping.

Unless noted otherwise on its packaging, grout should cure for at least 28 days before applying a sealer.

Cleaners should never contain acids or ammonia. Acids can damage the grout and the glazed surface of the tile, and ammonia can discolor the grout.

For removing grease, soap scum and mildew stains from grout joints see your Carpet & Flooring Network dealer for a professional strength grout cleaner.

Never use oil soaps or wax to clean your tile floor.

Protect Your Investment:
Use felt protectors under heavy pieces of furniture and chairs. Exterior metal furniture, which rests on tile floors or patios may rust, and cause staining, use protective pads on these as well.

Good quality entry and exit mats will help protect your ceramic tile from premature wear. They trap the dirt, sand, grit, and other substances such as oil, asphalt, or driveway sealer that would otherwise be tracked onto your floor. Mats are also suggested at heavy pivot locations, such as in front of your kitchen sink or stove.

Protect your floor when using a dolly for moving furniture or appliances. Never slide or roll heavy furniture or appliances across the floor.
